Northeast International Airport Hub

OBJECTIVE

A newly built greenfield airport in India, was conceived as a smart, sustainable and digitally integrated transportation hub. With an intent to handle high passenger handling capacity, the airport required a comprehensive IT and communication infrastructure that could support seamless, secure and high-performance connectivity for all stakeholders — airlines, ground services, security, retail, logistics, and passengers. The primary goal was to design and deploy a future-ready active and wireless network to:

  • Enable Real-Time Data Sharing: Interconnect all airport service packages — airside, landside, terminal operations, cargo, and security — over a unified digital platform.
  • Ensure 24/7 Secure Connectivity: For operations-critical systems including surveillance, baggage handling, access control, and air traffic services.
  • Support Wireless Mobility and IoT Integration: Across the airport to enable autonomous services, smart sensors, and mobile workforce management.
  • Create a Scalable, Resilient Infrastructure: That can support increased digital load and expansion phases over the next 20 years.

IMPACT

The deployment of a modern Software-Defined Campus and Data Center Network resulted in:

  • Enhanced Network Resilience: Dual data centers with active-active paths and stretched Layer 2 using VSX ensured minimal downtime and high availability.
  • Streamlined Operations: Centralized management through Aruba Central On-Prem simplified network operations and monitoring.
  • Seamless Integration: Airport systems and third-party applications were smoothly integrated within distinct network zones.
  • Scalability and Security: VXLAN EVPN-based segmentation allowed for easy scaling while ensuring tenant and system isolation.

HIGHLIGHTS

Network Architecture Design:

  • A 3-tier hierarchical model was adopted: Core, Distribution, and Access layers.
  • Dual data centers with high-availability clustering and active-active configurations.
  • Use of redundant fiber-optic backbone (10/40/100 Gbps) interconnecting terminals, cargo zones and ATC tower.

Wireless Network Rollout:

  • Deployed Wi-Fi 6 access points across passenger terminals, cargo bays, hangars and apron areas for high throughput and low latency.

Integrated Services and IoT Enablement:

  • Central Network Operation Center (NOC) to manage:
    • CCTV surveillance
    • Passenger information systems
    • Baggage reconciliation
    • Building automation (HVAC, lighting)
    • Fire and emergency systems
  • Implemented multi-tenant VLAN and SDN technologies to segregate and prioritize critical services.
